A crackdown on shanzhai phones factories began in Shenzhen last week by the Ministry and Information Technology with the State Administration of Industry and Commerce. Targeting sellers and producers, the crackdown confiscated  4800 units of shanzhai phones and 8000 units of shanzhai hard wares and 9 people has been arrested.

After years of booming business, the shanzhai industry was known all over the country and probably all the globe. But why did the government take crackdown this year? Will the shanzhai business be doomed this year? It is hard to say.

Some hold the view that the crackdown was caused by the widely reported SoPhone which is called the best knockoff iPhone. But the reasonable saying is that the crackdown was more likely related to the country’s intellectual property rights protection campaigns as most of the shanzhai phones were breaking IPR laws.

“The existing is rational”—let’s wait and see what will be the end.
